Paul Towndrow Trio
Alto saxophonist, Paul Towndrow is one of the country’s leading jazz musicians. Famously described in The Guardian as “a turbo-charged amalgam of all your favourite saxophone players”, Paul’s playing is passionate, sparky, and a mixture of authority and adventure. His Trio with Pete Johnstone on organ and Alyn Cosker on drums, knows how to groove and swing, and they’ve got deep roots in classic modern jazz. In a typical set, they’ll play tunes by Wayne Shorter, Thelonios Monk, and Miles Davis, and then they’ll take off into new tunes packed with intrigue and surprise, but always rooted for the audience. Paul is a communicator - he wants you to feel good, to know where you stand, and to excite you with some clever arranging, a burst of high tension blowing, some subtle blues, and loads of other tricks.
All three musicians are bandleaders who’ve performed all over the world - with their own groups; as members of SNJO; playing with major American stars, or as members of top folk and rock bands - and this Trio gives them all a hugely enjoyable platform where Johnstone’s malleable keyboard style and vast expressive palate creates the perfect foil for Cosker’s virtuosity and drive, and Towndrow’s sparkling saxophone.
Grooving modern jazz from three of the most exciting musicians on the current scene.
